The centerpiece of the Sloop Clearwater's educational offerings is the Sailing Classroom program, and the Clearwater will be offering 2.5-hour Sailing Classroom sessions from Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie. Sessions are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sept. 16, 17 and 18 and Nov. 4 and 5, as well as 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 17.

Students become:
• Scientists — by performing water quality tests and examining live creatures.
• Captains — by steering the ship with a quick lesson from our captains.
• Sailors — by working together to use their bodies and brains to hoist the mains'l.
• Observers — by participating in a moment of silence to take in the experience.

It's a perfect opportunity for youngsters to explore the Hudson River aboard "America’s Environmental Flagship," from the beautiful Poughkeepsie Waterfront. Waryas Park is adjacent to the Poughkeepsie train station, which offers Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak service, so getting there is a breeze.
