The Stanford Historical Society presents three Rev250 lectures examining life in the Hudson Valley during the Revolutionary War. The lectures will be held at the Stanford Free Library.

The Sept. 19 lecture by Dillon Striefeneder is titled "Looking Backward, Looking Forward: Change and Continuity in Stanford, N.Y., from the Revolution to the Era of Good Feelings."

How different was New York as an independent state in 1793 from its colonial predecessor in 1763? Did the American Revolution radically transform everyday life and institutions? Or was there widespread continuity through the revolutionary crisis? This talk examines the local experience in northeastern Dutchess County to consider the stakes and outcomes of the American Revolution by looking at the process of revolutionary settlement. It does so by examining local authority and government from roughly 1777 to 1821, paying particular attention to changes in governing institutions and the relationship that inhabitants of the newly erected Town of Stanford had with county and state-level government.
